Walter Q. Higdon was born in Higdon Store, GA, in the back room of the store, as were many other Higdons. His father died early, and his mother, Mary Elmira Arp Higdon, raised him at a boarding house she ran in Copperhill, TN. His first job was as an elementary school teacher at the Ritchie Creek School in Oasis, GA. While working there, he was involved in the Jack River Story. Walter Q. Higdon died at on May 24, 1967 at the age of 72. Please, see his obituary for more details of his life.
