Congratulations Scholarship Winners!
Four deserving students will each receive a $1,000 scholarship from the Higdon Family Association. The winners for 2008 are:

Allison Samantha Higdon, of Sonora, Texas, was nominated by Joyce
Higdon, of Eldorado, Texas. She is currently a junior at Texas A&M
University in College Station, Texas. Allison is an Allied Health major
and plans to pursue a master's degree to become a physician's assistant,
after her graduation in 2009. While in high school Allison worked as a
disc jockey at a locall radio station. She was active in student
council, National Honor Soceity, Fellowship of Christian Students, Once
Act Play and was the drum major of the marching band. Allison graduated
high school with high honors and was ranked 3rd in her class with a 4.0
grade average.
At Texas A&M she has been active and elected to the executive
council of a national sorority for three years in a row. She is a member
of Future Aggie Physician's Assistans, and has recently completed over
90 hours of community service for her major. Allison has been a
volunteer camp counselor and worked with youth ages 11-17.
Allison is the second of three dauthrers of Robert and Allen Higdon. A
sister ias also attending college. Allison believes in working hard,
her attitude is one of perseverance. "I believe that nest to God,
education is the single most important element for today's youth."
Allison's grandfather was Ernest Higdon, the son of Alec Higdon, the son
of Robert Neil Higdon.

Megan Lynne Tyrrell, of San Jose, California, was noimated by
her grandmother, Gale Higdon Tyrrell, of Vacaville, CA. She has two
younger sisters. Her father is Gregory Joseph Tyrrell, and her great
grandfather was Carl Henry Higdon. Megan plans to attend San Jose State
University to earn a degree in Business Administration.
While in high school she was involved in several activities both in and
out of school and has achieved high academic honors. At Leigh Higdon
School, she played field hockey and soccer all four years. Megan prefers
team sports over two-person or individual sports because "a game is
just not fun without teammates to encourage you on or to celebrate
victories with." Learning to juggle practices, games, and homework has
taught Megan how to manage her time wisely and effectively. She
received the Coach's Award in her junior year which is awarded for hard
work and willingness to understand and learn. She was awarded the Sports
Booster Asward in her Senior year because of she was an outstanding
athlete who has shown excellence and decidation to maintaining high
academic standards. Megan graduated high school with a GPA of 4.0.
Outside of school, Megan has been a volunteer as a church nursery
worker, and in several community service organizations, and in the VITA
program (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance), for which she completed a 3
week class to become certified to help low-income families file their
income tax returns. She has also served as a coach for and under-12
girls' soccer team. Megan enjoys studying mathematics and sciences and
plans to study Business Administration with a concentration in
accounting, in college.

Matthew Wood will be returning to Western Carolina University
in North Carolina in the fall to study construction management. Eva
Higdon Wood is his HFA sponsor. Eva has been a longtime member of the
HFA and is currently one of our Two-year Directors.
Matthew was a scholarship winner in 2007 also, so his scholarship is
being continued. Matthew is interested in the outdoors and enjoys
camping and doing things outside. He has worked with his father and
uncle on the family farm and enjoys farming. Wood Farm has been in the
family for a long time and supports three families. The family welfare
depends on the the success of the farm from year to year. He has been a
Boy Scout since the age of five and has acheived the highest rank of
Eagle Scout.
Matthew and Meredith's parents are Edgar A. and Rebecca Hobbes Wood, who
run the farm in Andrews, North Carolina along with Keith W. and Teresa
Minitz Wood.

Meredith Wood is Matthew Wood's sister and will be attending North Carolina State University with a major in accounting. Eva Higdon Wood was her HFA sponsor and grandmother. Meredith has excelled at sports and academic subjects, especially mathematics. Meredith has been a member of the basketball, volleyball, softball and track teams. She has played basketball since 4th grade and the other 3 since middle school. She has maintained an A and B grade point average during high school while still participating in sports. Meredith has many significant things in her life, God and her family are the most important to her. She says she has been blessed with a family who has guided her to the a woman who is a leader, who stands by her morals and values not to be persuaded by the temptations of life.
