Five Receive Higdon Family Association Scholarship Grants for 2020

HFA Scholarship Committee Chairman William R. “Bill” Higdon has announced that the committee has awarded scholarship grants to Halley Adams, of Rydal, Georgia; William Theodore “Ted” Garrett, of Bardstown, Kentucky; Morgan Leonard, of  Newburg, Maryland; Kelsey Nelson, of Frankfort, Kentucky; and Thomas Grant Bischoff, of Bardstown, Kentucky.

Sponsored by HFA member Don H. Higdon, of Columbus, GA, Halley Claire Adams is a sophomore pursuing a degree in history education at Reinhardt University, Waleska, GA.  She writes, “I believe that my history teachers have had the most positive influence on my life and would like to have the same impact on a student one day.”  In high school she was honored as the outstanding junior and outstanding senior in the Spanish Honors Society, for example.  Her high school and college teachers recommended her highly for her academic achievements and community service.  She is the daughter of Chad and Paula Brannon Adams and a descendant of Ed Higdon and his daughter Jessie Ruth Higdon Brannon Smith.

William Theodore “Ted” Garrett will attend The University of Kentucky in Lexington to prepare for a career in Agriculture Economics.  He states that one of his goals is to “take over the Higdon Family Farm from my grandfather to continue the farming tradition that my branch of the Higdon family has been doing for many, many decades.”  The son of Chris and Kathryn Ann Higdon Garrett, Ted has managed a lawn mowing business since he was in the eighth grade and worked as an intern this past year at Peterson Farms.  He also assists with early evening Mass at Saint Thomas Parish.

Morgan Leonard, of Newburg, MD, daughter of Kimberly Higdon Leonard, is a previous recipient of a Higdon scholarship award, and is now a sophomore at Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne, FL majoring in Ocean Engineering.  This summer she has an internship in Puerto Rico doing research on the coral reefs surrounding that island.  This past year she was on the women’s lacrosse team, helped with trash pickup on Florida beaches, and volunteered in Habitat for Humanity.

Kelsey Nelson, sponsored by Donald and Susan Higdon, of Bardstown, KY, plans to attend Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond to major in Secondary Linguistic Education.  She was inspired by her high school French teacher to travel to France with the class and eventually to go into the field of teaching French to others. “I want to teach French to allow students to do something they love that can bring them numerous opportunities,” she writes.  She is descended from William Bernard Higdon and Clara Isabella Browning Higdon, the parents of Raymond Higdon, who was her great grandfather, and the father of Donald Higdon, her grandfather.  Raymond Higdon was also the grandfather of Kelsey’s mother, Stephanie Higdon Nelson.

Also sponsored by Donald and Susan Higdon, Thomas Grant Bischoff, of Bardstown, KY, plans to major in Accounting and Finance at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY.  The son of Tommy and Tonja Higdon Bischoff, his great grandparents were Raymond and Elmira Higdon and grandparents Joe David and Joyce Higdon. While in high school Grant started and ran a recycling business, GB Recycling.  With his employees and volunteers he collects the recyclables from 61 Households, sorts them into categories, and delivers them to various recycling facilities in Kentucky.
