Smith, Eugene, 1999-2000 HFA President

1999-2000 HFA President Eugene Smith

Eugene Smith was the twelfth and last child of George Allen Smith and Bertha Belle Clemons. After graduation from St. Paul High School, Eugene was hired as an Engineering Assistant by the Kentucky Department of Highways. He was one of about 150 young men hired by the state to assist in the design and construction of the Interstate Highway System, which was just beginning to get underway.

Eugene married Georgetta Johnston in 1958. They are the parents of five children.

Eugene and Georgetta have attended all of the Higdon family reunions, beginning with the 1988 meeting at Rough River State Park in Kentucky with the exception of two, the 1996 Sacramento, California meeting and the 2001 meeting in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Eugene's Higdon connection is through his mother's grandparents, John Zachary Clemons and Mary Juletta Higdon, granddaughter of Ignatious Higdon and Mildred E. Dyson, early emigrants from Maryland to Grayson County, Kentucky.
