Rachel McKey Higdon, a retired area school and Primetime Choir member and a resident of Copperhill, Tennessee died February 27, 2005. She was born August 18, 1911, in Mooresville, North Carolina, to the Late James and Nannie Holder McKey.
A retired school teacher in Polk and Fannin counties, Mrs. Higdon graduated from the Eastern Carolina Teachers College and received her master’s degree from the Peabody Teachers College.
She was a charter member of the Primetime Choir, charter member of the Iris Garden Club of Copperhill, Appalachian Mountain Regional Campus Council, and the Economic Development Association. Her love of travel took her many places including China.
The widow of Walter Q. Higdon, she was a member of the First Baptist Church of McCaysville/Copperhill where she taught Sunday school for more than 50 years.
Mrs. Higdon is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law: Jane and Tom Brackett of Blue Ridge, GA, Sally and Boone Swain Lebanon, TN, Nan and Fred Harrison of Richland, MI; brother-in-law Charles E. Higdon of Knoxville, TN; grandchildren: Karen and Jeff Long, Geoff and Linda Harrison, Katy and Michael Moscardelli, Laura and Aaron Guin, Clinton and Whitney Swain, Andy Brackett, Ben and Annie Brackett; great grandchildren: Forrest Long and Sarah Long, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held March 2 at 11 a.m. in First Baptist Church McCaysvile/Copperhill with the Rev. Garry Barber and Dr. Tom Jordan officiating. Music was provided by the Primetime Choir. Pallbearers were grandsons Andy Bracket, Ben Brackett, Geoff Harrison, Clint Swain, and grandsons-in-law Jeff Long, Michael Moscardelli and Aaron Guin. Interment followed in the Crestlawn Cemetery.
