We Lose Jack Smith, First Chairman of the HFA
Horace Anderson “Jack” Smith, 75, a long time resident of Raleigh and recently of Knightdale, died Sunday, January 2, 2005 in a Raleigh hospital. He was born August 29, 1929 in Gaston County to the late Horace and Alma Smith. After receiving a degree from N.C. State College, Jack served 15 months in Germany while in the U.S. Army Reserves. Returning to civilian life, he worked in State Government and also joined the N.C. National Guard. Upon completing 30 years of military service, he retired as a Colonel. In 1981, he received a Meritorious Service Medal. During his career, Jack worked in the State Department of Agriculture, the Department of Conservation and Development, and directed the State Soil and Water Conservation Committee. For a year, he was Director of the Wake County Department of Natural Resources. Prior to entering private business, he served as Deputy Secretary of the N.C. Department of Natural Resources and Community Development. Throughout his career in state government, he received several awards. In 1978, he joined his wife in their family-owned management firm. He served as president of this firm, retiring in 1992. During his retirement, Jack enjoyed delivering mail at two hospitals. Also, when the General Assembly was in session, he enjoyed working part time in the Legislative Post Office. He also enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels, as well as assisting elderly friends. Throughout his life, Jack was an active church member. Over the years, he participated in many Bible studies, including Bible Study Fellowship.
He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann; sons, Andy and his wife, Louise, Doug and his wife, Betty and their children, Sarah and Patrick; a sister, Dorothy Knowlton and her family and also Jim Robinson, Samuel Robinson, Nancy Robinson and many other relatives.
Jack served as the first chairman of the Higdon Family Association, Inc. The first meeting was held on October 16, 1976, at the Howard Johnson Motor Lodge in Raleigh, North Carolina. Jack presided until the constitution and bylaws were approved and the officers were elected. At that time, the gavel was presented to Frank Higdon, who presided for the remainder of the meeting.
