Eva Higdon Wood, 94, of Andrews passed away Sunday, February 5, 2017 in a Murphy Medical Center. She was a native of Macon County, but had lived in Cherokee County since 1952.
Eva received a BS Degree in Home Economics from the Women's College of the University of North Carolina in Greensboro on June 5, 1944, and received her Master Degree in Public Health from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill on August 30, 1948.
She had worked as a civilian dietician during World War II. She had then worked with NC Extension Service and was a school teacher in Cherokee and Macon County school systems. Eva was also a homemaker.
Eva had served as a former board member for the Cherokee Historical Society and the Tri-County Community College Board of Trustees. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Konnahetta Women’s Club, Tri-County Democratic Women, NC Senior Tarheel Legislature, NC Commission on Aging, NC Foundation Board, and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Alpha Iota Chapter. She was a volunteer for the Cherokee County Food Bank. Eva received the Governor’s Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service on August 11, 1997.
She was a member of the Andrews First Baptist Church, where she had taught Sunday school for over 50 years. Eva was also a nursery worker, volunteer for the Kentucky Mission Trip, was part of the CARE Ministry and was very active with Women’s Missionary Union (WMU), which promoted missions. She was a messenger to the Truett Baptist Association from Andrews First Baptist Church and was a former messenger to the Southern Baptist Association. Eva received the Baptist Heritage Award for WMU work on April 23, 2013.
She was the daughter of the late Dennis C. and Ethel Higdon Higdon and the wife of the late Edgar A. Wood, Jr., who died November 5, 1983. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Allison and Nola Lilley; and two brothers, Joe Higdon and Dennis C. Higdon, Jr.
Surviving are two sons, Eddie Wood and wife, Rebecca and Keith Wood and wife, Teresa; three grandchildren, Matthew Wood and wife, Mallory of Andrews, Meredith Hensley and husband, Justin of Murphy, and Leah Wood of Andrews; one great grandson, Miles Edgar Wood; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, February 9, 2017 in the Andrews First Baptist Church with Revs. Calvin Bobo and Al Hood officiating. Interment will be in the Valleytown Cemetery. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be Deacons of the Andrews First Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends from12-1:45 Thursday afternoon at the Andrews First Baptist Church prior to the services.
