This Higdon gristmill was located on what is now Ellijay Road in Macon County, North Carolina. Check Higdon gristmill in the Photo Gallery for a story of interest.

The patchwork of boxes in the middle allow you to go back up one level to the photo thumbnails array which you clicked on to get to a larger view of a single image.
The village needed a working farm to get its food. The Mansion was sited on the highest hill. The farm buildings were sited around it. The tin smelter was to the left and down near a source of water.
The woman with the umbrella is not trying to get out of the sun, but to shield her painting, both to get better reads on the colors she was using and to keep her oil paints from drying to quickly.
