
William R. "Bill" Higdon, of Moon, Virginia, is pleased to announce this year's winners of the Higdon Family Association scholarship award. Amber Smith and Leah Wood, last year's recipients, have done very well in their college studies and will receive the award again for the next academic year. Leah is completing her freshman year at Young Harris College, Young Harris, Georgia, hopeing to pursue a bachelor's degree in English with a business/public policy minor. This spring Amber will finish her sophmore year at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College. She plans to transfer to the University of Louisville School of Nursing in the fall to prepare for a career in nursing.

Leah is the daughter of Keith and Teresa Wood, of Andrews, North
Carolina and the granddaughter of HFA member Eva Higdon Wood, who
recommended her for the award. Amber is the daughter of Douglas and Mary
Smith, of Leitchfield, Kentucky and the granddaughter of HFA member
Eugene Smith who recommended her.
Both young women were also recommended enthusiastically by their
professors and others who know them. As well as excelling in their
college courses, both participate in extracurricular activities. Leah
was employed in the College's costume shop, where she assisted with
theatrical productions. Amber workedwith at risk youth at the clarkson,
Kentucky Resource Center and as a Student Ambassador at ECTC to help
mentor students, conduct campus tours, and perform other service
projects. The Higdon Family Association congraulates them on their
achievements.

Higdon, of CLinton, Tennessee, and Sally Higdon Swain, of Lebanon,
